2019 AFCON Round of 16 - A punch in the face of Zambian league 1

2019 AFCON Round of 16: The Afcon has stormed the barbed knockout stage and the Zambian league has no representation.

Its a freaky pill to stomach but in our drive to promote our league, most of the European leagues still remain the most competitive and well-organized leagues in the World. Its a fact we want to argue against but we must accept it without a fuss because if we don’t do so, we shall not learn from them when we have everything to learn from them.

The Afcon just swung into the round of sixteen and the teams at this level give us free yet concrete lectures on the quality of different leagues and probably where the Zambian league lies.

Away from the the European leagues which have the most representation in the round of sixteen due to the magnitude of the quality they posses, the Arab teams of Morrocco, Tunisia, Egypt and Algeria have all qualified with their teams heavily scented with players from their leagues. It is a screaming announcement about how strong the Arab leagues are and how much they are reaping from the massive confidence they have been investing in their local players.

Where Is Zambia Premier League

When the tournament began, we had ten players in different teams representing the Zambian league and after the first round matches, all the ten players have disappeared with their teams. What does this say about our league? Not yet as strong as we claim it is.

The Zambian league has been on the rise but there has been nothing to be excited and boast about it yet. The Zambian football league stakeholders need to accept the fact that much as the league is on the rise, the league still has much to be desired in terms of investment and many technicalities. These are technicalities we need to learn from the leagues that have representation in the 2019 Afcon round of 16.

Seeing young and promising players like Clings Kangwa and Lameck Banda being let to attend trials at a middle tabled team in Russia at the expense of having their income increased to remain and play continental football for a Zambian gives a sad reading.

Zanaco just failed to sign Thandi Mwape at the expense of T.P Mazembe and now they have lost Boyd Musonda to Sfaxien.

Is the Zambian league as strong as we claim it is? If not what are we not doing which we must start doing?
