Phala’s brace loadshed Zesco United out of confederations cup

Thuso Phala of Supersport United

Supersport United progressed to the semi-finals of the 2017 CAF Confederations Cup following a frustrating 2-2 away draw to Zambia’s Zesco United at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Saturday 23 September in Ndola.

First leg match ended in a 0-0 stalemate at Lucas Moripe Stadium in South Africa.

Zesco United started the match on high tempo with John Ching’andu putting the home side in front after benefiting from a Misheck Chaila cross 4 minutes into first half.

United could have gone at half time leading by more than 2 goals but wasted key clear chances.

Supersport started to dominate play as the game progressed and restored parity through Thuso Phala when he struck inside 18 yard area on 34th minute to beat Zesco goalkeeper Jacob Banda.

Half-time went into 1-1 stalemate.

Zesco doubled the advantage via defender David Owino on 50th minute when he scored from a close range.

Thuso Phala inflicted pain on Zesco again in added time to send his team in to the next round.
