…. As second placed Indeni battle it out with fourth placed Gomes in a Ndola derby.
By Mumba Mwila
After securing a quarter final berth against arch rivals Power Dynamos in this years Barclays Cup to be played on the weekend of 29/30 September, Mufulira Wanderers will now shift their attention back to
Super League promotion. They have the chance to increase the point difference to either 9 or 10 with a win against FQMO Roads should Indeni draw or lose at home against a spirited Gomes team in Ndola. Mufulira Wanderers will go into this game having known the results for their closest rivals Indeni who play this afternoon. It might not sound like a big deal, but it is for this Mufulira Wanderers team, considering the chase for the Super League on the table. Wanderers’ wins that have given them the breathing space in zone two is not accidental but great works done by Justin Chinama and his crew and their confidence is at maximum level, which will make it very difficult for FQMO Roads to win this match.
Even if ‘Mighty’ falls behind, they know that they have the willpower to come from behind. This is evident in their last 2 games against Real Nakonde in the preliminary round of the Barclays Cup and the league game against bitter rivals Mufulira Blackpool, in both games emerging 2:1 winners after trailling but they shouldn’t underestimate this FQMO Roads team who have just lost one in the last five; winning two and drawing two, and are a team that look good defensively.
They are the second best team from North Western province in the zone second to Kansanshi Dynamos and that is enough to convince Wanderers that they will have a big test this weekend especially that the game will be played in Solwezi at the home ground of FQMO Roads.
Believe it or not, FQMO Roads are the eighth best team defensively in this 16 team zone having allowed 17 goals in 21 games played so far. Their weekend’s opponents have conceded only 11. On the other side of the field, Mufulira Wanderers has the best attacking prowess with 36 goals compared to Roads’ 19.
This one is going to be a very interesting game to watch for we might be suprised by the result at the end. This is a key game for the Mufulira outfit just as all remaining games at this stage of the season as the journey back to the super league gets heated. Mufulira Wanderers would not like to drop the tempo and drop points lest they start panicking with Indeni still having hopes of surpassing them for the only Super League spot.
Indeni vs Gomes
Elsewhere, Indeni entertain Acid boys Gomes in a Ndola local derby. This is arguably the game of the week in this weekend’s Zone two fixtures. Gomes are a rejuvanated side with 4 wins and a draw in the last 5 wins. In the last 4 games, they have a better run more than even the league leaders Mufulira Wanderers with all 4 wins, while the former has 3 wins and a draw. This is the form that should most likely scare Indeni whose run in the last 5 games has seen them record 3 wins and most recently 2 draws.
Gomes will be upbeat going into this fixture knowing a win will see them second on the log should Kansanshi Dynamos record any result other than a win.
Mining Rangers vs Kansanshi Dynamos
Second from bottom Mining Rangers would wish their fortunes to change if their realistic chances of survival are to be realised by beating third placed Kansanshi Dynamos at home who go in this match as favourites, hoping to overtake Indeni and aiming for the second spot should Indeni’s game against Gomes end in a draw.
Kashikishi Warriors vs Chambishi
Chambishi takes the longest trip of this zonal teams against botton placed Kashikishi Warriors who are destined to return to Division 2. They too will be hoping for fortune to favour them by beating Kashikishi and wishing for Indeni to lose and Kansanshi and Gomes drawing in their respective games.
ZNS Luamfumu vs Konkola Blades
Konkola Blades who in the write’s opinion should have been up there fighting it out with Mufulira Wanderers for Super League promotion travel to ZNS Lwamfumu and they too hope the teams above them do not record positive results to help them finish respectably come the end of the season.
